IPS officer Vimukt Ranjan of the 2009 Himachal cadre, currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Special Protection Group (SPG) — the elite force responsible for the security of the Prime Minister and other top dignitaries — has been awarded the prestigious President’s Medal for his distinguished service.
A native of Hamirpur, Ranjan has been on central deputation in New Delhi since 2023. Prior to this, he served as Commandant of the Vanghat Battalion in Una and as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Kangra district. During his tenure in Kangra, he was entrusted with the security of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in McLeodganj, a responsibility he carried out with distinction.
As SP Kangra, Ranjan not only maintained law and order but also launched a large-scale crackdown on drug trafficking. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued to serve tirelessly, even after contracting a severe infection himself.
An alumnus of Government College, Dharamshala, Ranjan is regarded as one of Himachal Pradesh’s dynamic and dedicated police officers.
Speaking on receiving the honour, he said, “Being awarded the President’s Medal is a matter of pride and great honour for me. I am grateful to the nation and will continue to fulfill my responsibilities with even greater dedication.”
