₹15 Crore Loss in Mandi City Due to Rain, But Only ₹2 Crore Relief — How Will Recovery Work Proceed?
Three Lives Lost, Several Rendered Homeless in July 29 Downpour
Mandi, August 12 – The heavy rainfall that lashed Mandi city on July 29 caused damage worth over ₹15 crore. However, the state government has so far released only ₹2 crore in relief funds to the Municipal Corporation. Terming the amount insufficient, the Mandi Municipal Corporation has urged the government to provide additional financial assistance.
Mayor Virender Bhatt said that the July 29 deluge claimed three lives and left many houses severely damaged, rendering them uninhabitable. Dozens of vehicles were swept away in the floods and are now beyond repair. In addition, government property also suffered considerable damage, with several retaining walls and protective structures collapsing. After assessing the overall impact, the Municipal Corporation estimated the losses at over ₹15 crore, yet the government has so far allocated just ₹2 crore.
Mayor Bhatt has appealed to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to release more funds to accelerate relief efforts and ensure maximum support for those affected.
It may be recalled that torrential rain wreaked havoc in Mandi city during the night of July 28–29, causing severe damage, particularly along Jail Road and near the hospital area. Other parts of the city also suffered significant losses. While key public services have been restored due to the urban setting, many internal repairs and rehabilitation works are still pending. The Municipal Corporation maintains that sufficient funding from the state government is essential to carry these out effectively.
