Conditions in Disaster-Hit Areas Unchanged Even After Over a Month: Jai Ram Thakur
Jairam Thakur, former CM and Leader of Opposition
Shimla, August 9 – Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has expressed concern that even after more than a month since the recent disaster, conditions in most affected areas remain unchanged. In a statement issued from Shimla, he said that neither the main roads nor the link roads have been restored, preventing farmers, horticulturists, and floriculturists from transporting their produce to the markets.
He said that while locals have attempted to reopen roads using their own resources, such efforts cannot restore connectivity across the entire region. With roads still blocked, residents are being forced to take dangerous routes, risking their lives. Calling it a failure and insensitivity on the part of the government, Thakur said that despite repeated requests and appeals, no large-scale, urgent effort has been launched to restore road connectivity, leaving disaster-affected people to bear the consequences of governmental negligence.
Thakur further stressed that the livelihoods of most disaster-hit areas depend on floriculture, horticulture, and agriculture. These perishable products must reach markets within a set timeframe, which is only possible if both main and link roads are functional. However, even after 39 days, neither have the main roads been fully restored nor the link roads reopened, resulting in fully matured produce failing to reach markets.
Due to these blockages, products from affected areas are rotting and being discarded, devastating the local economy. Thakur remarked that while crops survived nature’s fury, they are now being destroyed by the government’s inaction. This negligence, he said, is hindering people’s recovery efforts.
Government Deliberately Delayed Appointment of Art Teachers
The Opposition Leader also accused the government of intentionally delaying the appointment of art teachers for two and a half years. He pointed out that during his government’s tenure, 314 posts of art teachers were created under Post Code 980, budget provisions were made, advertisements issued, and examinations conducted in 2022.
He said only the final result was pending when the new government took over, but the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu administration deliberately withheld the results, denying jobs to deserving youth. Thakur reminded that the Congress party had loudly promised five lakh jobs before coming to power and demanded that the Chief Minister apologise to the state’s youth for intentionally withholding results, calling it a shameful act.
Extends Raksha Bandhan Greetings
Jai Ram Thakur extended his warm greetings to the people of Himachal Pradesh on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, wishing that the festival of pure and unbreakable love between brothers and sisters brings happiness, prosperity, and well-being to all.
