Shimla, August 2:
A warning has been issued by the Senior Engineer of the Water Regulation Division of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) in Talwara Township, stating that the water level at Pong Dam is rising rapidly. Due to the increasing inflow, excess water may need to be released at any time through the spillways.

The alert has been sent to administrative officials in several districts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, urging them to stay prepared for possible water discharge.

As per the official report, the water level at Pong Dam was recorded at 1361.07 feet at 6 AM on August 2, 2025, which is significantly higher compared to 1328.45 feet on the same date last year. The average inflow into the reservoir at that time was 87,586 cusecs, while only 18,995 cusecs are currently being discharged through the Pong Power House turbines.

With continued rainfall forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in the Beas catchment area, the dam may require controlled release of water via spillways in the near future to manage reservoir pressure.

In light of this situation, revenue, irrigation, drainage, and flood control departments have been directed to remain on high alert and take all necessary precautions. Copies of the directive have also been circulated to concerned Deputy Commissioners, Executive Engineers, and Tehsildars to ensure preparedness across the region.
