Nag Panchami, a festival rooted in devotion and reverence, is celebrated every year on the fifth day (Panchami Tithi) of the bright fortnight of the month of Sawan. This year, it falls on July 29, 2025. In Hinduism, this day is considered highly auspicious for worshipping the serpent deities (Nagas). It is believed that sincere prayers on this day can help devotees overcome Kaal Sarp Dosh, inviting peace, prosperity, and protection into their lives.

Mythological Significance

According to sacred scriptures, this day marks a special celebration in Naglok (the realm of serpents). It is believed that the serpent gods descend to earth to bless their devotees and accept offerings. A traditional ritual on Nag Panchami involves bathing idols of serpents in cow’s milk and offering milk as a symbol of devotion. This act of worship is believed to bestow protection on one’s family lineage, shielding it from misfortune.

The Mahabharata Connection

The festival is also linked to a story from the Mahabharata. King Janamejaya, seeking revenge for the death of his father Parikshit, performed a massive serpent sacrifice (Sarpa Yajna), in which countless serpents were drawn into the sacrificial fire. On Panchami, sage Astika intervened and stopped the ritual, saving the serpents. Since then, the day is commemorated as Nag Panchami, celebrating compassion and forgiveness.

Relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh

Astrologers recommend Nag Panchami as an important occasion for those suffering from Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscopes. Worshipping the serpent gods on this day is said to reduce the malefic effects of this planetary condition, bringing balance and positive changes in one’s life.

A Message of Harmony with Nature

Nag Panchami is not only a religious observance but also a reminder of humanity’s coexistence with nature and other living beings. It teaches us the value of respecting all creatures and maintaining ecological harmony, reflecting the core tenets of dharma.

In essence, Nag Panchami is a sacred blend of myth, astrology, and environmental consciousness—urging us to honour both divine and earthly life with humility and care.
