Mandi, July 29 – The Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has once again been severely affected by relentless rainfall. Torrential rains that lashed the region overnight have caused widespread destruction across Mandi town and its surrounding areas. Tragically, two people lost their lives in the Jail Road area after being swept away by a surging stream. Their bodies have since been recovered by authorities. The incident occurred as a result of a sudden rise in the water level due to intense rain.

The impact of the downpour has been severe in multiple parts of Mandi, including Palace Colony, the Zonal Hospital area, Victoria Bridge, and several other localities. Water and debris flooded homes and shops, plunging residents into a night of fear and chaos. Hundreds of vehicles were damaged or buried under debris, bringing traffic to a complete standstill and creating immense difficulties for the public.

Mandi Municipal Corporation Mayor Virender Bhatt, Commissioner Rohit Rathore, and other senior officials visited the affected areas to assess the situation. Relief and rescue operations are underway, though ongoing rain continues to pose challenges for rescue teams.

One of the biggest concerns is the closure of both major national highways. The Chandigarh–Manali National Highway is completely blocked at multiple points—4 Mile, 9 Mile, Dwara, and Jhalogi—due to landslides. The Pathankot–Mandi NH has also been disrupted at several locations between Padhar and Mandi, with debris blocking the road.

A major landslide near Victoria Bridge has cut off access from both sides of the bridge, adding to the difficulties. The administration is closely monitoring the situation, but persistent rainfall is significantly delaying relief efforts.

Mandi district authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather improves. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain over the next 24 hours, urging continued caution.
