Mandi, July 26:
While natural disasters during the monsoon season are a cause for concern across the country, their impact is felt even more deeply when they strike one’s own hometown or state. This sentiment was powerfully evident in the wake of the recent devastation caused by floods and landslides in Pandav Shila village, located in the Dhar Jarol panchayat of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh.

In a heartfelt display of unity and compassion, Himachali communities based in Bengaluru and Pune came together to support the affected families. Driven by a strong sense of belonging and humanity, these diaspora groups carried out a two-phase relief initiative.

In the first phase, members of Himachali in Bengaluru, with support from the Mandi district administration, provided essential items like first-aid kits, food supplies, and blankets to those impacted by the disaster.

In the second phase, members of Himachali in Pune visited the affected region in person and extended direct financial assistance to nine vulnerable families. They also helped arrange basic household items and medical supplies, ensuring targeted, on-ground support.

Sunny Sharma, a senior member of Himachali in Bengaluru, shared that visiting the affected village and witnessing the devastation firsthand was an emotional experience—“there wasn’t a dry eye among the volunteers.” While the relief effort was modest in scale and limited by resources, its emotional resonance and human value were immense, he added.

The group emphasized that even small acts of help can ease suffering when done collectively. They urged other concerned citizens to contribute in whatever way they can, according to their ability and means.

This initiative is a powerful reminder that distance doesn’t weaken the bond with one’s roots. When disaster strikes, the Himachali spirit transcends geographical boundaries, with hearts and hands ready to help—no matter how far away they may be.
