Monitoring Landslides at 22 Locations in Himachal; 375 Roads, Including 3 National Highways, Remain Blocked

The relentless monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh. As of Tuesday evening, landslides have led to the closure of 375 roads, including three national highways. National highways remain blocked in Mandi, Sirmaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Mandi alone accounts for 254 blocked roads, while 78 roads are shut in Kullu.

Additionally, 326 power transformers and 314 drinking water schemes are non-functional. Mandi and Kullu are the worst affected—201 transformers are down in Mandi and 113 in Kullu. Drinking water supply is disrupted in Chamba (63 schemes), Mandi (62), Kullu (44), Chamba again (40), and Hamirpur (35).

Fresh Landslide Risk Report Issued

The State Emergency Operations Center released an updated report Tuesday, identifying 22 sensitive landslide-prone areas. Of these, 15 locations face a low risk, 5 are under moderate threat, and 2 have been marked as safe.

Most Active Monitoring in Mandi; Risk Still Mostly Low

Mandi district remains under close watch, with surveillance ongoing at 16 sites including Parashar, Kotrupi, Ghoda Farm–Shalgi North Campus, Ghoda Farm-2, and Griffon Peak sites 1 through 6 and 8 through 10, as well as Vishwakarma Temple. All of these are categorized under low risk.
However, Sonarli-2, Tattapani, and Sandhol in Mandi are flagged with moderate risk levels.

Monitoring in Shimla and Solan

In Shimla district, the Jatogh area is under moderate risk. In Solan, Dagsai has also been flagged as moderate-risk, while Dakshi has been reported as safe.

Kangra District Reports Two Safe Zones

In Kangra district, Baldoon (Nurpur) shows no signs of danger, while Kangra Colony and Dharamshala have been marked low-risk.

Monitoring Systems & Coverage

Notably, the Vishwakarma Temple in Mandi lacks an on-site monitoring system, but based on weather forecasts, it has been flagged for low risk. Monitoring systems at most other locations remain active and are continuously collecting data.

Rain to Continue Over Coming Days

According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall is expected to continue from July 23 to 25, though no specific warning has been issued for this period. Heavy rainfall is forecast from July 26 to 28, with a yellow alert likely in some areas.

Monsoon Toll So Far: 135 Dead, 34 Missing

This monsoon season has so far claimed 135 lives in Himachal Pradesh, with 224 people injured and 34 reported missing. The highest number of fatalities has occurred in Mandi (23) and Kangra (21).
To date, 397 houses, 277 shops, and 1,037 cattle sheds have been completely destroyed. Another 797 houses have suffered partial damage. Total property loss is estimated at approximately ₹1,247 crore.
Mandi district has suffered the most damage, with 936 homes affected—365 of which have been completely demolished.
