Shimla, July 1:
Senior BJP leader and former Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Dr. Rajeev Bindal, is set to serve a third term as the party’s state president. Following the official notification of the state president election on June 29, the nomination process began on June 30, with voting scheduled for July 1. However, with Dr. Bindal being the sole nominee by Monday, he was unanimously declared the new BJP state president.

With crucial municipal and panchayati raj elections due later this year, the party has chosen to continue under experienced leadership by extending Dr. Bindal’s tenure. Union Minister Anurag Thakur and Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur were present during the nomination filing, making it clear from the outset that this was a formality.

Born on January 12, 1955, in Solan, Dr. Bindal is an Ayurvedic physician and a graduate of Rohtak University. After completing his medical education, he spent three years providing free medical services in tribal regions of Bihar, turning his commitment to service into action.

His political career began in 1995 when he was elected Chairman of Solan Municipal Council. In 2000, he became an MLA and went on to win three consecutive terms from the Solan Assembly constituency. From 2007 to 2012, he served as the Minister for Health and Family Welfare. After the Solan seat was reserved, he contested and won from Nahan in 2012 and again in 2017.

Dr. Bindal faced his first electoral defeat in the 2022 Assembly elections, losing by a narrow margin. In January 2018, he was elected Speaker of the Assembly, and in January 2020, he was appointed BJP State President for the first time.

However, in May 2020, he resigned on moral grounds following a controversy involving an alleged audio leak related to the Health Department. The case also led to the arrest of then-Health Director Dr. Ajay Gupta. In the wake of the episode, the party handed over the reins to Suresh Kashyap, a Scheduled Caste leader and MP from Sirmaur.

Nearly three years later, in April 2023, BJP National President J.P. Nadda reappointed Dr. Bindal as the state president, marking his return to the leadership role with renewed trust and responsibility.
