Shimla, June 20:
The Himachal Pradesh Police has significantly ramped up its anti-drug operations under the state government’s zero-tolerance policy, spearheaded by the Chief Minister. In a strong push against drug traffickers and cartels, the Special Task Force (STF) and Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) launched a coordinated campaign between May 19 and June 19, 2025, resulting in the arrest of 258 individuals under the NDPS Act. This marks a major milestone in the state’s efforts to combat the drug menace.

During this one-month period, the STF registered 183 cases across the state. These included offences related to commercial, intermediate, and small quantities of narcotics, as well as cases involving the cultivation of illicit plants. Strict legal action is being pursued against all those arrested. In addition, preventive detention proceedings have been initiated under the PIT-NDPS Act against 21 individuals, with formal orders already issued in six cases and others currently under review.

Police have also seized assets worth approximately ₹2.69 crore, with verification underway by the competent authority. The confiscated contraband includes substantial quantities of charas, heroin, opium, poppy husk, tablets, capsules, injections, LSD, and over 1.33 lakh poppy plants.

The ANTF, on its part, registered 12 cases during this period and seized significant amounts of charas, heroin, poppy husk, banned capsules, and more than 1.30 lakh narcotic plants. These units are not only taking stringent action against drug traffickers but are also actively working to raise public awareness. Through outreach programmes in schools and colleges, the youth are being educated about the dangers of substance abuse and encouraged to be part of the solution.

The state government and police are also involving the public in this fight. Citizens can confidentially report drug-related activities via the “Drug-Free Himachal” mobile app or by calling the toll-free helpline 1908.
