Shimla, June 14: With scorching heat gripping the plains, a large influx of tourists is making its way to the cooler climes of the hills. Shimla, the Queen of Hills, is witnessing a surge in tourist footfall — and along with it, a significant rise in traffic congestion.

In the past week alone, over 2.25 lakh vehicles have passed through the Shoghi barrier, leading to massive gridlocks across the city. Journeys that would normally take minutes are now stretching into hours, prompting the police to deploy additional traffic personnel.

Shimla DSP (Traffic), Sandeep Sharma, confirmed that two extra traffic units have been assigned to manage the situation on the roads. “We’ve deployed more teams to help regulate traffic flow,” he said. “We also urge the public to cooperate and plan their travel a bit earlier to avoid peak congestion.”

Despite efforts to manage the situation, the traffic snarls are proving to be a serious challenge during this peak tourist season.
