Shimla, 14 June – Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla today opened the two‑day 12th International Conference on “Sustainable Materials, Bio‑Resource Integration Technologies and Traditional Science” at the Himalayan Forest Research Institute, Panthaghati, Shimla. The event, jointly organised by the Himalaya Science Congress Association and the Himalayan Forest Research Institute, has drawn nearly 75 scientists and academicians from across the country.

The conference aims to harmonise cutting‑edge scientific techniques with age‑old wisdom to advance sustainable development and environmental conservation. In his inaugural address, the Governor noted, “As we rapidly embrace artificial intelligence, we must not neglect traditional knowledge. Science should always serve society and the nation.”

He emphasised that gatherings like this provide researchers with a valuable forum for exchanging ideas that ultimately benefit the wider community. Stressing that environmental protection is today’s foremost imperative, he urged the scientific fraternity to seek enduring solutions.

Prof. Deepak Pathania, President of the Himalaya Science Congress Association, said the organisation has been promoting scientific outreach for 13 years and nurturing scientific temperament among children. Approximately 150 participants from around India are attending the conference.

Sandeep Sharma, Director (in‑charge) of the Himalayan Forest Research Institute, highlighted the institute’s specialised work in forestry research and medicinal plants, noting efforts to encourage farmers to cultivate these species to bolster biodiversity and local economies. He added that the research papers and discussions presented over the next two days are expected to chart new pathways for integrating modern science with traditional knowledge.
