Tipper Overturns on Chandigarh-Dehradun Highway, 5-KM Traffic Snarl Follows

A major mishap was narrowly averted on Thursday morning when a tipper truck loaded with gravel overturned on the Chandigarh-Dehradun Highway near Moginand. The incident caused a massive traffic jam stretching over five kilometers, severely impacting vehicular movement, especially in the industrial area of Kala Amb.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, and no other vehicles were caught in the accident. As a precaution, morning traffic heading from Dehradun to Chandigarh was temporarily diverted via Vikrambagh.
According to reports, hundreds of tippers and other vehicles were stuck in the jam. While smaller vehicles were able to squeeze through on one side, the situation posed significant challenges in the event of any emergency.
Police received information about the overturned tipper around 6:45 AM and promptly responded. With the help of hydraulic equipment, it took nearly four hours of effort to remove the vehicle and clear the road.
Concerns Over Overloading Resurface
The incident has once again raised concerns about overloading in gravel-laden tippers. Such heavy loads pose a serious risk, especially on downhill stretches. Just days ago, Sirmaur’s RTO had issued a challan of over ₹1.25 lakh to a tipper carrying 53 tons of gravel—more than double the permitted 21 tons.
