Covid Alert Issued in Himachal Pradesh, Masks Made Mandatory in Hospitals
IGMC Hospital
Shimla, June 4:
As Covid-19 cases begin to rise again across the country, Himachal Pradesh has reported a fresh case, prompting the state health department to issue an immediate advisory. In a precautionary move, wearing masks has been made mandatory across all government hospital premises in the state.
According to the health department, not only patients but also attendants accompanying them will be required to wear masks. Special caution has been advised for vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, and individuals with serious health conditions. The advisory also emphasizes strict adherence to social distancing norms in public places to help break the chain of transmission.
At Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla—the state’s largest government hospital—special arrangements have been made to handle any potential surge. A dedicated makeshift Covid ward with 150 oxygen-supported beds has been prepared. Dr. Praveen S. Bhatia, Deputy Medical Superintendent of IGMC, stated, “Following the directives of the health department, all necessary preparations have been completed. People showing symptoms such as cough, fever, or cold are being advised to report to the hospital immediately for timely treatment and to prevent further spread of the virus.”
He further added that the hospital is fully equipped with adequate testing kits, essential medicines, and round-the-clock medical staff. The health department has also instructed all Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), principals of medical colleges, and superintendents of government hospitals to remain on high alert and monitor the situation closely.
Last week, the department had already issued directions to hospitals to ensure oxygen plants are functioning properly, to maintain sufficient stock of testing kits, and to strengthen ICU facilities. The health department has also appealed to the public to remain vigilant, avoid crowded places, wear masks, and seek immediate medical attention if any Covid-like symptoms appear.
