Shimla, June 3:
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Sanvardhan Yojana in Hamirpur, marking a significant step toward forest conservation and environmental sustainability in Himachal Pradesh. As part of the event, he presented certificates to two women’s groups from Amlehar and Bhavda under the Naudan block. These Mahila Mandals will undertake plantation on two hectares of forest land each and maintain the plantations for five years.

The initiative aims to revive barren and degraded forest areas by planting fruit-bearing trees, thereby increasing green cover. The scheme also creates livelihood opportunities by engaging women’s groups, youth clubs, and self-help groups in forest-related activities.

The Chief Minister also launched the Green Adoption Scheme, under which private enterprises and NGOs will adopt barren forest land for afforestation and upkeep. In the first phase, Ambuja Cement will take up 25 hectares, Adani Foundation 10 hectares, and Ultratech another 10 hectares. Certificates were presented to the participating organizations. The scheme not only promotes environmental stewardship but also enables companies to fulfill their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in a meaningful way.

During the event, CM Sukhu inspected the passing-out parade of newly inducted Van Mitras (Forest Friends) and interacted with them.

“There was a shortage of field staff in the Forest Department, which was hindering conservation efforts. The appointment of Van Mitras—selected purely on merit—will help bridge that gap. I’m especially proud that many women have excelled in this recruitment,” said the Chief Minister. “You are the true guardians of our forests. Your future role will be considered carefully.”

He added that the state government has also increased women’s reservation in police recruitment to 30%, and proudly noted that Lahaul-Spiti’s administration is now led entirely by women, including the Deputy Commissioner.

Calling Himachal a “Devbhoomi” (land of the gods), CM Sukhu emphasized that its forests are not only spiritual and cultural treasures but vital to the state’s environment, economy, and tourism. Since coming to power, his government has worked toward transforming Himachal into a Green State, with several initiatives already showing success.

Among these, he highlighted the Van Mitra Yojana, which aims to generate employment, promote public engagement in forestry schemes, and spread awareness about forest conservation. He urged the Van Mitras to go beyond their official duties by involving local communities, preventing illegal logging, remaining vigilant against forest fires, and actively participating in plantation drives.

“The oath you’ve taken isn’t just a formality—it’s a commitment to protect and nurture our forests,” said the CM. “This scheme will become a milestone in preserving the ecological pride of Himachal.”

On this occasion, he also announced the opening of three new wellness centers under the Hamirpur Municipal Corporation.

Additionally, the CM released a souvenir titled ‘Samvaad’ and unveiled the book ‘The Mountain’s Wilderness of Spiti’. A mobile app to manage the attendance of Van Mitras was also launched.

Recognizing excellence in forest management, he honored Block Officer Rakesh Kumar and his team from Palampur, as well as Forest Conservator Abhilash Damodar and his team from Chamba.

Additional Chief Secretary (Forests) K.K. Pant welcomed the Chief Minister and provided an overview of the department’s ongoing projects and goals. He also congratulated the newly appointed Van Mitras.
