Mandi, May 25:
In a first for northern India, three bridges on the Mandi-Pandoh four-lane stretch are being constructed using Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) technology. The innovative approach is being used for the construction of girders—the superstructure that connects the two ends of the bridge.

Unlike traditional girders that rely on steel reinforcement, UHPFRC uses fiber-based materials, resulting in lighter weight components that are easier to install, require less concrete, and save time in construction. This not only increases efficiency but also improves durability.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) approved the use of UHPFRC in 2022, but this is the first time the technology is being implemented in northern India. The girders, manufactured in Pune, have been transported to Himachal Pradesh for installation. Although the cost of production is lower than traditional girders, transportation balances out the price. The components have undergone thorough quality checks and testing in Pune before dispatch.

The three bridges are being built at Sambal, Eight Mile, and Nine Mile on the Mandi-Pandoh stretch. According to NHAI Project Director Varun Chari, this is the region’s first project using UHPFRC, and the goal is to complete the bridges before the monsoon season begins, significantly easing travel along the route once the four-lane is fully operational.

Why UHPFRC Technology Stands Out

UHPFRC offers advanced structural properties, making it stronger and more durable than conventional concrete. It provides higher resistance to saltwater, chemicals, and environmental wear, with minimal maintenance requirements—making it ideal for long-span bridges.

The technology uses F-155 grade concrete, compared to M-50 in traditional girders. Apart from bridges, UHPFRC is suitable for buildings, tunnels, reservoirs, and water pipelines, thanks to its flexibility and resilience.

The construction is being carried out by KMC Company, whose Project Manager, Satya, confirmed that work is progressing rapidly. The implementation of this technology marks a significant step forward in infrastructure development in Himachal Pradesh.
