Shimla, May 23:
The controversy surrounding the Sanjauli mosque in the Himachal Pradesh capital shows no signs of de-escalation. Despite the Shimla Municipal Corporation declaring the mosque illegal and ordering its demolition, members of the Muslim community continue to offer prayers and carry out religious activities at the site—under administrative protection. This has drawn sharp objections from the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, a Hindu organization, which has warned of a large-scale protest if these activities are not halted immediately.

On Friday, amid a heavy police presence, members of the Muslim community gathered at the mosque to offer Jumu’ah (Friday) prayers. This prompted opposition from members of the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti, who had already requested that the district administration prevent religious gatherings at the disputed site. In protest, they recited the Hanuman Chalisa near the mosque premises.

The Samiti further warned the government that continued religious activity at what they describe as an “unauthorized” structure would lead to intensified demonstrations by Hindu groups. They also alleged bias, claiming that if the police used force against protesting Hindus, the response would be met with even greater resistance, suggesting demonstrators would arrive armed with sticks if necessary.

The organization has announced a strategy meeting scheduled for Friday evening to discuss their next course of action.

The situation remains tense, with law enforcement maintaining a watchful presence as both sides remain firm in their positions.
