Rising Respect for Daughters in Himachal: Child Sex Ratio Improves from 947 to 964
Shimla, May 16:
Himachal Pradesh has made remarkable progress in promoting gender equality and inclusive early childhood development, thanks to a series of innovative initiatives introduced by the current state government. As a result of these sustained efforts, the child sex ratio has shown a historic improvement—rising from 947 girls per 1,000 boys to 964 over the past two years.
The government has launched several welfare schemes aimed at supporting girls, women, and early education, especially benefiting families from economically weaker backgrounds. One such initiative is the Indira Gandhi Sukhat Suraksha Yojana, designed to secure the future of girls born into BPL (Below Poverty Line) families.
Under this scheme, ₹25,000 is deposited with an insurance company at the birth of each girl child born into a BPL household. Additionally, it provides a life insurance cover of ₹2 lakh for both parents. The maturity amount will be made available to the girl between the ages of 18 and 27, depending on her preference. This initiative complements existing welfare programs such as Beti Hai Anmol, further strengthening the safety net for girl children.
To support working women, the government has proposed the construction of 13 new working women’s hostels in areas such as Solan, Neri, Daruhi, Palampur, Luthan, Baddi, Gagret, Nagrota Bagwan, and Chanoor Industrial Area, as well as within the Solan Medical Devices Park. With an investment of ₹132 crore, these hostels will offer safe and affordable accommodation to women across the state.
In the field of education, the government is working to enhance early childhood learning. All 18,925 Anganwadi centers across the state will be converted into “Anganwadi-cum-Pre-Schools,” providing play-based foundational education to children aged 3 to 6. Anganwadi workers will be specially trained to deliver this curriculum, ensuring a strong academic start for young learners.
These forward-looking measures underscore the Himachal Pradesh government’s commitment to inclusive and holistic development. Through these targeted schemes for girls, women, and children, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu continues to move the state closer to his vision of a compassionate and welfare-oriented government.
