Mandi: Dispute Over Water Leads to Assault on Hindu Family by Members of Muslim Community
The victim's family pleads for justice from the SP
Mandi, May 15
A late-night altercation in Mandi town has escalated into a serious incident involving members of two communities. A Hindu family was allegedly assaulted by a group of individuals from the Muslim community, originally from outside Himachal Pradesh, over a dispute related to collecting water from a natural spring. The incident took place late Tuesday night.
According to reports, the altercation began near a public water source in the School Bazaar area. Bhagat Ram Chauhan, a retired senior pharmacist from the Jail Department, along with his wife and son, stopped near the spring to fill a bottle of water after dining at a local hotel. His wife stepped out of the car to fill the bottle, where two women from the Muslim community were already drawing water. A disagreement arose after Chauhan’s wife requested to fill a small bottle first, leading to a verbal argument that quickly escalated.
Chauhan and his son attempted to defuse the situation, but soon, 20–25 individuals, allegedly from the same community, arrived on the scene and reportedly assaulted all three family members. Chauhan stated that the individuals involved are not local residents but migrants from other states, currently living in rented accommodation in the area.
Following the incident, the victim’s family, along with local traders and representatives from Hindu organizations, met with Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma, demanding strict action against the perpetrators.
Chauhan also raised concerns about the conduct of the police at the City Chowki (police post), alleging that he was treated rudely when he went to file a complaint. He has called for a fair investigation and appropriate legal action against those involved in the assault.
Responding to the incident, SP Mandi Sakshi Verma confirmed that an FIR has been registered based on the victim’s complaint and that a medical examination of the injured has been conducted. She assured that the investigation is being carried out thoroughly, with all aspects of the incident under careful review.
