Dharamshala, May 15:
The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) recently declared the results for Class 10, and while the overall performance may appear satisfactory, a deeper look at the merit list reveals a concerning trend. Out of the 117 students who secured a place in the merit list, only 20 are from government schools, while the overwhelming majority—97—are from private institutions.

This disparity has raised serious questions about the state of public education in Himachal Pradesh. Despite repeated assurances from the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led state government about reforms and improvements in the education sector, these numbers point to a persistent gap in quality and outcomes between government and private schools.

While private school students continue to outperform in board examinations, the limited presence of government school students among the top performers highlights ongoing issues related to teaching quality, resource allocation, and educational infrastructure in the public system.

Girls Continue to Excel for Second Consecutive Year
For the second year in a row, girls have dominated the merit list. In the 2025 results, 88 of the 117 top-performing students are girls, while only 29 are boys. Among them, 97 are from private schools and just 20 from government schools.

In 2024, out of 91,130 students who appeared for the Class 10 examination, 67,988 passed. That year, the merit list featured 92 students—22 from government schools and 70 from private institutions. Of those 92, 71 were girls, showcasing a consistent trend of academic excellence among female students.

The overall pass percentage in 2024 stood at 74.61%, reflecting the continued strong performance of girls and underlining the need for greater support and reform in government-run schools to bridge the widening achievement gap.
