Shimla, May 14 – The Atal Super Specialty Medical Institute in Chamiyana, near Shimla, marked a significant milestone on Wednesday as it launched surgical services, successfully performing nine operations on the very first day. The procedures were carried out by the Department of Gastroenterology under the leadership of Dr. Brij Sharma, with support from the Department of Anesthesiology.
The hospital had already commenced outpatient (OPD) services and began admitting patients from May 1. With the addition of surgical capabilities, the institute now offers a comprehensive range of medical services—including OPD, inpatient care, and surgeries—within a single facility. This development provides much-needed relief to patients with serious conditions, eliminating the need to shuttle between different hospitals.
According to hospital officials, state-of-the-art operation theatres equipped with the latest technology have been set up to deliver world-class surgical care. Dr. Sharma noted that gastroenterology surgeries will now be performed regularly at the institute—operations that were previously conducted at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla.
Currently, the institute offers OPD services in neurology, nephrology, urology, gastroenterology, and plastic surgery, with an average daily footfall of around 500 patients. Treatment is available for a wide range of conditions—from digestive disorders and prostate issues to urinary problems and complex plastic surgeries.
Emergency services, however, have not yet been initiated. In urgent cases, patients are still being referred to IGMC, Shimla. The hospital management has confirmed that work on establishing a dedicated emergency unit is underway and will be operational soon.
To enhance accessibility, an hourly Tempo Traveller shuttle service has also been launched between Dhalli Tunnel and Chamiyana, ensuring convenient transportation for patients and their families.
