Shimla: ₹5 Lakh Stolen from Renowned Nathuram Halwai Shop
Shimla, May 12: In a significant theft from one of Shimla’s busiest commercial hubs, ₹5 lakh in cash was stolen from the famous Nathuram Halwai shop located in Lower Bazaar. CCTV footage from the store shows a temporary employee committing the theft. The accused is currently absconding, and police have launched an investigation.
The shop’s owner, Manju Sood, discovered the theft on the morning of May 11 upon opening the store and finding the cash register empty. She immediately informed the cashier, Mamta Devi, who promptly lodged a complaint at Sadar Police Station. According to the complaint, the shop had been closed as usual on the night of May 10, with all valuables secured. However, the next morning, nearly ₹5 lakh in cash was found missing from the drawer.
During the review of CCTV footage, the suspect—identified as Yograj, a temporary worker—was seen taking money from the register. At the time of the theft, the other employee on duty had stepped out briefly, which Yograj allegedly used as an opportunity to carry out the act.
Yograj, a resident of the Basantpur area in Shimla district, was not a regular employee. He had been working at the shop only on an as-needed basis. Police suspect the theft was premeditated.
According to investigators, the suspect does not possess a mobile phone, making it challenging to track his location. Nonetheless, police teams are conducting raids at potential hideouts and have expressed confidence in apprehending him soon. An FIR has been registered under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code.
