Shimla, May 11:
A spokesperson for the Himachal Pradesh government announced that residents of newly constituted and upgraded Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the state will receive significant relief in water and property taxes. In a move aimed at easing the transition of these areas into the urban administrative framework, the government has decided that rural water supply rates will continue to apply in these localities for the next three years. This measure is expected to benefit approximately 47,820 consumers across the state.

In addition to concessional water tariffs, residents of these areas will also receive exemptions in property tax, helping to mitigate any immediate financial burden following the administrative reclassification.

As part of the recent administrative restructuring, the state government has established 14 new Nagar Panchayats: Sandhol, Dharampur, Baldwara, Banikhet, Khundian, Kotla, Nagrota Surian, Kunihar, Jhanduta, Swarghat, Barsar, Bharari, Bangana, and Shillai. Furthermore, the towns of Hamirpur, Una, and Baddi have been upgraded to Municipal Corporations, while Nadaun and Baijnath-Paprola have been granted the status of Municipal Councils. These changes have brought several new regions under the jurisdiction of ULBs.

The spokesperson emphasized that this decision aims to prevent an abrupt rise in living costs for residents newly brought under urban governance. By maintaining rural rates for water and offering property tax relief, the government seeks to ensure that residents can adjust to the new administrative setup without undue financial strain. The move, he added, will not only offer immediate economic relief but also pave the way for improved access to essential urban services.
