India Launches ‘Operation Sindoor’: Airstrikes Target Terror Camps in Pakistan, Nine Sites Hit
India's air strike on terrorist hideouts in Pakistan
New Delhi, May 7:
India has carried out precision airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan under a military operation codenamed “Operation Sindoor.” The Ministry of Defence confirmed the action at 1:44 AM, stating that nine terror-linked locations were targeted in the strike. The Indian Armed Forces are scheduled to hold a press briefing at 10 AM today to provide detailed information on the operation.
According to an official statement released via the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Indian military executed “Operation Sindoor” in response to credible intelligence indicating that the targeted sites were being used to plan and coordinate attacks on Indian soil. The strikes were carried out in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The airstrikes are widely seen as a retaliatory measure following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 25 Indian and one Nepali tourist were killed.
Precision, Restraint, and Strategic Intent
The Ministry emphasized that the action was “measured, precise, and non-provocative.” No Pakistani military installations were targeted during the operation. Officials stated that stand-off weapons were used, allowing Indian forces to avoid breaching Pakistani airspace.
Despite this, Pakistan has claimed it shot down three Indian fighter jets and one drone, and has responded with artillery fire in sectors along the Line of Control.
Pakistan’s Response and Rising Tensions
In a sharply worded statement, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the operation, labeling it an “act of war,” and warned of a strong response. The Pakistani military reported that six sites were struck in 24 missile attacks, resulting in eight deaths, including five civilians, and 35 injuries.
The already fragile diplomatic ties between the two nations have further deteriorated. A key water-sharing treaty is reported to have been suspended, and cross-border shelling has intensified. Global powers are closely monitoring the situation as tensions inch toward a flashpoint.
Global Concern and Support for India
Following the strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump voiced support for India, saying, “India was attacked. We stand with India. We too have fought terrorism for decades.” Israel expressed its full backing, stating, “Terrorists must be eliminated, wherever they hide. We stand firmly with India.”
Several Gulf nations, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, also issued statements of support for India, underscoring the broad international consensus against terrorism.
Strategic Discussions Underway
Back in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened an emergency Cabinet meeting early this morning to assess the evolving situation and chart out the next steps, including diplomatic outreach and strategic preparedness.
A Balakot Redux?
This latest military action draws immediate comparisons to India’s 2019 Balakot airstrikes, launched in response to the Pulwama attack. Just like then, the current situation places India and Pakistan once again at the brink of direct conflict, underscoring the volatility of the region.
As the world urges both sides to exercise restraint, all eyes remain on South Asia as the implications of “Operation Sindoor” continue to unfold.
