											Bilaspur, April 29:
It’s a proud moment for Himachal Pradesh as progressive farmer Hariman Sharma from the Ghumarwin area of Bilaspur district has been awarded the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi. He received this prestigious national honor for his groundbreaking contribution in enabling apple cultivation in low-temperature regions—an achievement that has opened new doors for horticulture across the country.
Pioneering Apple Cultivation Beyond Traditional Limits
Hariman Sharma made history by successfully developing apple saplings that could thrive outside the traditionally cold regions where apple farming was once considered possible. His innovation challenged and ultimately broke the long-held belief that apples could only be grown in high-altitude, extremely cold areas.
He developed a unique apple variety named ‘HRMN-99’, which flourishes even in relatively warmer climates. Thanks to this breakthrough, regions with lower chilling requirements are now seeing successful apple production, benefiting not just farmers in Himachal, but across various parts of India.
A Story of Perseverance and Innovation
Despite limited resources and numerous challenges, Hariman Sharma remained determined. Through continuous experimentation and resolve, he developed ‘HRMN-99’—a result of years of hard work and scientific curiosity. His success has inspired thousands of farmers, many of whom are now venturing into apple cultivation in non-traditional areas with growing confidence.
A Moment of Pride for the State
Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh congratulated Sharma, calling the recognition a matter of immense pride for the entire state. He lauded Sharma’s dedication, innovation, and research spirit, which have earned him national recognition.
Coming from a modest farming background, Hariman Sharma’s journey from a small village to the national stage is a shining example of what determination, innovation, and perseverance can achieve. With the Padma Shri honor, he now stands as a role model for farmers across India.
