Bilaspur, April 23 – Himachal Pradesh is charting a new course in tourism by moving beyond its traditional hill destinations and stepping into the realm of water-based experiences. A landmark step in this direction is the launch of the state’s first island tourism project in Gobind Sagar Lake, located in Bilaspur district. This initiative is poised to offer tourists a unique experience while also boosting local employment and attracting private investment.
As part of the project, four islands within the lake are being developed, with the tendering process for three of them already completed. In the latest update, the third island—comprising Bholu and Jyor (Jyoripattan, Tehsil Jhandutta)—has been publicly allotted to Virender Kumar from Mittalghoda Chowki, Shimla, for the highest bid of ₹3,15,000.
The project is being developed along the lines of well-known destinations like the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Kerala. Planned features include boating, adventure sports, eco-friendly accommodations, hotels, restaurants, fishing zones, bonfire sites, destination wedding venues, and hiking trails. Night events will showcase Himachali folk music and dance, offering tourists a taste of the region’s rich cultural heritage.
What sets this initiative apart is that it operates entirely on a public participation model without drawing from the state’s budget. Spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq, the project stands as a model of administrative self-reliance. “Our goal is to promote tourism while simultaneously generating local employment, encouraging private investment, and building a self-sustaining governance model. We hope this serves as an inspiration for other districts in Himachal,” said DC Sadiq.
The project is expected to open up self-employment opportunities for local youth in areas like guiding, boat operations, food services, and cultural performances. With this development, Bilaspur district is set to emerge as a major tourism hub that spans water, land, and air.
