Shimla, April 22 – In a move expected to benefit both commuters and the state’s transport department, local passengers in Himachal Pradesh will now be allowed to travel on long-distance buses operated by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). The decision, taken by the HRTC State Conductor Union following a recent hike in the minimum fare, aims to improve passenger convenience and increase the corporation’s revenue.

Until now, local commuters were not permitted to board long-route buses, often leaving seats vacant and resulting in revenue losses. However, the union has now decided to allow boarding from any point on all routes—local or long-distance.

State Conductor Union President Preet Mahendra and General Secretary Deepender Kanwar have appealed to conductors across Himachal to allow local passengers to board from every stop. The union believes this step will enhance accessibility for passengers while also contributing to a significant boost in the corporation’s earnings, helping ensure timely disbursement of allowances to employees.

The decision comes shortly after the state government raised the minimum fare on HRTC buses from ₹5 to ₹10. According to union leaders, all depots across the state reported a noticeable increase in revenue on the very first day of the revised fare structure. They also noted that the fare adjustment has helped resolve issues related to handling change, benefiting both conductors and passengers.

Confirming the initiative, Shimla DM Devasen Negi said consistent efforts are being made to improve the corporation’s financial performance. He noted that HRTC management has already issued instructions to allow boarding wherever passengers are available. Applauding the union’s decision, he added that the move will enhance public transport services across the state and make travel more convenient for all.
