Shimla, April 20: A massive fire broke out at Saraswati Vidya Mandir (SVM) School in the Lower Vikasnagar area of Shimla in the early hours of Sunday, reducing crucial school records, furniture, and office infrastructure to ashes. Fortunately, the incident occurred during the night, and no one was present in the building, averting a potential tragedy.

According to reports, the fire started around 3 AM and rapidly engulfed the upper floor of the school building, which is run by Vidya Bharati. Flames quickly spread to the administrative office, burning documents, furniture, and other vital resources beyond recognition.

Firefighting Challenges Amid Narrow Roads

Local residents, startled by the sight of raging flames, immediately alerted the fire department. However, fire brigade vehicles faced difficulty in reaching the spot due to the narrow approach road leading to the school.

“Firefighters had to manually pull hoses uphill to access the site. Their quick response and relentless effort helped save the rest of the building,” said a local eyewitness.

After hours of intense operation, the fire was brought under control, preventing further damage to the structure.

Suspected Short Circuit Under Investigation

Initial investigation by the Shimla Police suggests that a short circuit may have triggered the fire, though a detailed forensic report is awaited to confirm the exact cause.

The school management has estimated a significant financial loss due to the destruction of essential administrative materials, including student records and official documents.

Community Shocked, School to Remain Closed Temporarily

The incident has shocked the local community, as SVM is a prominent educational institution in the area. The school is expected to remain closed temporarily while damage assessments and restoration efforts are underway.

Authorities are expected to review fire safety protocols in educational institutions across the city to prevent such incidents in the future.
