Chief Minister in high level meeting with Army officials
Shimla, April 19: In a strategic and spiritually significant move, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has proposed opening a new route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Shipki-La in Himachal’s Kinnaur district, offering both religious pilgrims and the region a fresh opportunity for development. The proposal was made during a key meeting with Lt. General Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-Chief of the Central Command, held in Shimla.
CM Sukhu highlighted that the Shipki-La Pass, located on the Indo-Tibet border, provides a viable entry route to Tibet and could become a pivotal corridor for thousands of Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist pilgrims visiting the sacred Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake annually.
Boost to Border Tourism, Local Economy, and Security
In the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the strategic and economic potential of enhancing infrastructure and simplifying access in border areas. He proposed the creation of a Himachal Scout Battalion, similar to existing forces in Sikkim and Ladakh, with special recruitment provisions for locals from the border belt.
Additionally, Sukhu called for the removal of Inner Line Check Posts, which often hamper tourist movement, and suggested better coordination with paramilitary and army units to unlock the tourism potential of areas like Spiti and Kinnaur.
Tourism Infrastructure and Military Collaboration in Focus
The state is planning a slew of tourism and military-friendly initiatives, including:

An airstrip at Rangrik to allow landing of large aircrafts

The Indian Army responded positively, with Lt. Gen Sengupta announcing plans to build an all-weather ice-skating rink and indoor stadium in Kaza, along with organizing free eye check-up camps for residents.
