Shimla, April 15 – The weather in Himachal Pradesh is expected to turn extremely harsh from April 18 to April 20, with the Meteorological Department issuing multiple alerts for heavy rain, hailstorms, and thunderstorms. Several districts are on high alert, as a strong western disturbance is set to impact the region during this period.
According to the Shimla Meteorological Centre, heavy rains are likely to lash Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi on April 18 and 19, with Shimla district also bracing for hailstorms and thunder activity. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 km/h, especially in high-altitude areas.
Orange Alert for Rain and Hailstorm in Multiple Districts
The department has issued an orange alert for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, warning of intense hailstorm and heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has also been issued for Hamirpur, Solan, Bilaspur, and Sirmaur, where thunderstorms, lightning, and winds up to 45 km/h are expected.
Meteorological scientist Sandeep Sharma said that this disturbance, carrying upper-level moisture and wind activity, is a classic springtime western disturbance. It could affect tourism and agriculture alike, leading to potential travel disruptions and crop damage.
Tourists and Farmers Advised to Take Precautions
Tourists planning to visit popular destinations like Manali, Shimla, Dharamshala, and Dalhousie during this period have been advised to stay alert and avoid risky routes. The local administration has also been directed to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
Meanwhile, farmers across the state are on edge as standing wheat crops, seasonal vegetables, and apple blossoms in higher reaches may face significant damage due to hail and high winds. A similar hailstorm last week had already affected apple orchards in some areas.
Drop in Temperatures Expected
With the anticipated downpour, day temperatures are expected to dip by 5 to 7°C, bringing a chill back to the hills and relief from the heat in the plains. Residents are advised to dress warmly and stay indoors during storm activity, especially during late evenings and nights.
The Meteorological Department emphasized that April 18–20 could witness sudden changes in weather, and people should keep track of real-time updates through official channels.
