Shimla, April 15 – In a major crackdown under the ongoing anti-drug campaign, the Rohru Subdivision Police in Shimla district arrested a 27-year-old Nepali national with a significant quantity of narcotic substances. The arrest took place during a routine patrol on Tuesday morning.

The accused, identified as Sanju Rai, son of Prem Rai, hails from Sigaon village, Dr. Indrapur, District Banki, Nepal, and was currently residing in Parola, Uttarakhand, with a local contact named Vinod Raturi.

Drug Haul: Syrups & Sedative Tablets Seized

During the operation, police recovered 70 vials of codeine phosphate and triprolidine hydrochloride syrup (Anerx 100 ML)—a commonly abused cough syrup—and 530 tablets of nitrazepam, a powerful sedative often misused for intoxication.

The contraband was found in the possession of the accused, who failed to provide any valid documentation or medical justification for carrying such a large quantity of regulated substances.

NDPS Act Case Registered, Accused in Custody

A case under Section 22 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused. He has been taken into custody and will be produced before the court on Wednesday.

Police Investigating Drug Source and Smuggling Network

According to the police, preliminary interrogation is underway, and the probe is being extended to identify the source of the drugs and the intended destination or buyers. Officials suspect the accused may be part of a larger drug smuggling network operating in the region.

A senior police officer from Rohru stated, “We are following all leads to trace the origin of these drugs and whether they were meant for local distribution or being transported elsewhere. More arrests are possible.”

This arrest comes as part of Himachal Pradesh Police’s intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse in hill districts. Authorities have appealed to the public to report suspicious activities and help keep their communities safe from the growing menace of narcotics.
