Bilaspur, April 14:
Tensions flared in the historic Sandhu Maidan area near Gobind Sagar Lake after a mazar (shrine), at the center of a recent controversy, was demolished by unknown persons late Saturday night. The incident has sparked unrest among locals and prompted the Bilaspur administration to increase police presence in the area to maintain peace.

The mazar had become a point of dispute over the past week after a controversial social media post surfaced, triggering a visit by members of the Savarna Morcha. While the situation was diffused at the time following discussion about the shrine’s history, tensions remained.

An FIR had been lodged earlier in Sadar Police Station, and an investigation was underway when this latest development took place.

Police Launch Probe, CCTV Footage Under Review

On Sunday morning, locals discovered the shrine had been demolished overnight, leading to panic and protest-like atmosphere in parts of the area. Authorities have now stepped in to prevent escalation.

“A case has been registered against unknown persons. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined,” said Additional SP Shiv Chaudhary, confirming that the matter is being taken seriously.

DSP Madan Dhiman also assured that the investigation is being conducted impartially, and those responsible will be identified and brought to justice.

Precautionary Measures in Place

To avoid any communal unrest, the police have increased patrolling and are closely monitoring the situation. Community leaders have been asked to cooperate and maintain peace.

The incident has once again brought the spotlight on sensitive structures in public spaces and the need for prompt administrative intervention in matters of religious significance.
