Shimla, April 12: Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla flagged off the 5th edition of the ‘Silk Route Ultra Trail Run’ in Narkanda, Shimla district, marking a vibrant start to a unique event combining sports, culture, and social awareness under the Drug-Free Himachal campaign.
The event, organized by Himalayan Expedition in collaboration with HP Tourism Department, Indian Oil, Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Committee, and Himaira, saw participation from over 250 runners from across India and abroad, including athletes from France and Germany. The 102-km-long trail run, divided into four categories, stretches from Narkanda to Sarahan, tracing the scenic and historic Hindustan-Tibet route.
Addressing participants and attendees, Governor Shukla emphasized the importance of channelizing youth energy towards positive pursuits.
“Youth are not just the future but the present of our nation. It is our collective moral duty to guide them on the right path,” he said.
He hailed the run as more than a sports event — calling it a symbol of Himachal’s rich cultural heritage, eco-tourism potential, and community spirit. He also appreciated the organizers for combining sport with social messages, especially about drug de-addiction, employment, and environmental consciousness.
Raising concern over the rising drug abuse among youth, the Governor called for collective action from society, beyond government efforts.
“A drug-free Himachal is possible only when each citizen contributes to the fight against addiction,” he said.
ADGP & Commandant General Home Guard Satwant Atwal Trivedi praised the initiative, noting its value in spreading awareness through active community participation.
ADGP (Law & Order) Abhishek Trivedi also spoke, reinforcing the need for such positive, energetic platforms to channel youth toward purpose-driven lives.
The event also featured cultural performances by students of Shivalik Nursing College, focused on the harmful effects of drugs. Dr. Akhil Sharma addressed the medical aspects of addiction, while Lakshya, from Himalayan Expedition, shared details of the trail event.
Founder Atul Mehta felicitated the Governor, and Hemant Sharma delivered the vote of thanks.
Several dignitaries, including Secretary to Governor C.P. Verma and senior administrative officials, were present, adding significance to the launch of this socially conscious sporting event.
