Damaged bridge and truck vehicle hit
Kullu, April 12: A major mishap occurred in the Banjar subdivision of Kullu district late Friday night when a bridge built in the 1970s on National Highway-305 near Mangalore collapsed, bringing traffic on the key route to a complete standstill.
The incident took place around 3:30 AM, when a 10-wheeler truck carrying cement was crossing the bridge. The aging structure gave way under the vehicle’s weight, plunging both the bridge and the truck into the river below. Thanks to the swift response of local residents, the driver was rescued in time and rushed to a nearby hospital. His condition is reported to be stable and out of danger.
The collapse has severed vehicular movement on NH-305, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides. The highway is a vital link connecting Banjar valley with Aut, Ani, Luhri, and Rampur, and its closure has significantly disrupted the region’s communication and transport systems.
Initial investigations reveal that the bridge, constructed in the 1970s, had exceeded its expected lifespan. Following the incident, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh announced that a Bailey bridge would be installed immediately to temporarily restore connectivity.
SDO NH-305 Tahal Singh confirmed the incident and stated that the Banjar police team is present at the site, managing traffic and beginning work on alternative routes. The administration is actively working to normalize the situation and ensure minimal inconvenience to the public.
This incident has once again raised concerns over the condition of aging infrastructure in hilly regions, where weather and terrain add further strain on decades-old constructions.
