Shimla News: Municipal Corporation Cracks Down on Illegal Hawkers Near Kali Bari Temple in Shimla
Action follows viral video sparking public outrage and demands for equal enforcement
Shimla, April 10 – In response to a viral video that stirred public emotions and sparked a controversy across the city, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has launched a strict crackdown on illegal hawkers operating near the historic Kali Bari temple.
The controversy began when a video surfaced on social media showing a street vendor, allegedly from a particular community, selling grams after reportedly spitting on them. The incident triggered public anger and prompted the Municipal Corporation to take immediate action.
A team from the Corporation reached the site on Thursday to inspect the situation. Upon questioning, the vendor failed to produce any valid license or documents permitting him to run a stall at the location. As per municipal regulations, unauthorized street vending is not allowed in public spaces. The Corporation swiftly ordered the removal of the illegal hawker.
The incident has now taken a communal turn, with the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti voicing strong objections over the issue. The organization has demanded stringent action and accused the administration of selective enforcement of rules. In a public statement, the Samiti warned that if fair action is not taken, around 500 members of the Sanatani Hindu community will protest by setting up their own hawker stalls across Shimla.
“Why are Sanatani people stopped from selling vegetables or food, while some others are allowed to operate freely without checks?” a spokesperson from the Samiti questioned.
The Municipal Corporation has assured that it is looking into the matter seriously and will ensure that the law is applied uniformly across all communities. The administration emphasized that maintaining law, order, and public hygiene remains its top priority.
As tensions rise, all eyes are now on the authorities to ensure that justice is not only done but also seen to be done—without bias or leniency.
