Shimla, 07 April: On the occasion of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s foundation day, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur made serious allegations against the state government, accusing it of widespread corruption in the power sector. Thakur claimed that the tragic death of HPPCL General Manager Vimal Negi was a direct consequence of the ongoing scams within the sector, and that it occurred under suspicious circumstances. Thakur demanded a CBI investigation to uncover the truth behind Negi’s death, which he suggested could be either a planned murder or a suicide resulting from the mounting corruption.

Government’s Inaction Raises Suspicion

During a press interaction at the BJP party headquarters in Deepkamal, Thakur questioned the state government’s reluctance to act on the case, stating that despite promising justice to Negi’s family, no accused individuals had been questioned in the 15 days following the incident. “The government should clarify who it is protecting. Was it a suicide or a planned murder? The mystery surrounding this death continues to deepen,” said Thakur. He urged for a thorough investigation by the CBI to ensure transparency and accountability.

Allegations of Corruption in Power Sector

Thakur further accused the government of undermining reputed power companies like SJVN and NHPC by taking back power projects from them. He alleged that the state was instead negotiating with lesser-known companies from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, suggesting a well-planned nexus between government officials and politicians to benefit from the deals. “This is all part of a bigger game being played, which the government is trying to suppress,” he added.

HRTC Fare Hike Sparks Outrage

In addition to his concerns about the power sector, Thakur also criticized the government for increasing the minimum fare of HRTC buses by ₹5, a move he said would severely affect the poor. “HRTC is the primary mode of transport for common people in the state. Now, even for a short 100-meter journey, people will have to pay ₹10. This decision will break the backs of the poor,” Thakur stated. He accused the state government of breaking its promises to the public, calling the fare hike a merciless decision that would further burden the citizens.

Support for Vocational Teachers’ Protest

Thakur also met with vocational teachers who were protesting at Chowda Maidan. Listening to their grievances, he assured the teachers that their demands would be raised with the government. “The demands of vocational teachers are legitimate, and addressing them will not put a heavy financial burden on the state. The government should approach this issue with empathy,” he said, expressing his support for their cause.

Thakur’s remarks underscore his ongoing criticism of the current state government’s handling of key issues in Himachal Pradesh, from power sector mismanagement to the welfare of its citizens.
