Shimla, April 7:
In a significant breakthrough, Amritsar Police have arrested Jaspreet Singh alias Jassa, the main accused in the vandalism of four Himachal Pradesh government buses. The buses, parked at the Amritsar bus stand, were pelted with stones and defaced with pro-Khalistan slogans on March 22. The accused, a resident of Manochal Kalan village in Tarn Taran district, was apprehended after a series of raids by Punjab Police.
A Punjab Police official confirmed the arrest and stated that efforts are ongoing to capture other suspects connected to the incident. “We are interrogating the arrested individual to locate his associates and continue our investigation,” the official added.
The targeted buses belonged to Himachal Path Parivahan Nigam and were damaged when the windows were smashed and Khalistan-related slogans were painted on them. The act not only caused damage to public property but also raised concerns about the potential threat to communal harmony in the region.
Following the incident, a case was filed, and investigations began immediately. Police officials reviewed CCTV footage, which led to the identification of the accused. The Himachal Pradesh government quickly informed the central government and the Punjab government, urging swift and strict action due to the sensitive nature of the incident. Himachal officials stressed that such actions could endanger the peace and security of the state.
A few days before the vandalism, suspicious individuals with vehicles displaying Bhindranwale posters had been reported in Himachal Pradesh. Local residents, who noticed these activities, alerted the authorities. The police have now linked these reports with the recent events in Amritsar, and additional investigations are underway.
The authorities have assured that further arrests will be made, and FIRs will be filed against the other individuals involved in the incident. This development highlights ongoing concerns regarding such disruptive activities and the need for increased vigilance in maintaining peace and security across the region.
