Shimla, March 23: Prof. Sat Prakash Bansal, the Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), recently celebrated his three-year tenure at the helm of the institution. During a special program held in Shimla, Prof. Bansal outlined the key achievements of his tenure and urged the Governor and the state government to relieve him of additional responsibilities to focus on the university’s continued development.
In his address, Prof. Bansal highlighted the significant strides HPU has made under his leadership. One of the most notable achievements has been the implementation of measures to ensure transparency in examinations and the timely declaration of results. He emphasized the importance of these reforms, noting that they have contributed to the university’s growing reputation for academic integrity.
Key Achievements Under Prof. Bansal’s Leadership
A major challenge that Prof. Bansal successfully navigated was maintaining the Grade-A accreditation for HPU, a task he described as demanding yet fulfilling. “Keeping HPU’s Grade-A rating was no small feat, and I am proud of the team’s efforts in making this possible,” he said. In addition to this, the university has made significant progress in revamping its academic structure. One of the highlights is the university’s readiness to upgrade its B.Ed course to a four-year program, a move that aligns with the national educational reforms under the New Education Policy.
Prof. Bansal also shared that the university’s financial self-sufficiency has been improving, with HPU generating between Rs 40 to 50 crore from its own resources. This initiative has helped reduce the reliance on government funding while boosting the university’s operational efficiency.
The university has also achieved impressive milestones in research. In his three years, HPU has published over 1,300 research papers and 500 books. Additionally, the university has been granted 15 patents, further solidifying its role as a hub for innovation and academic excellence.
Infrastructure and Future Plans
As part of his vision to elevate HPU to an international standard, Prof. Bansal highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of an international guest house and hostel. The university has allocated Rs 24 crore for these projects, aiming to enhance the campus facilities and attract global recognition.
Moreover, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the establishment of Campus-2 has already been prepared. This expansion is expected to further bolster HPU’s academic capacity and infrastructure. Additionally, the university recently honored 100 of its distinguished alumni during an alumni meet and announced plans for the construction of an alumni building to foster continued engagement with former students.
Future Focus Areas
Looking ahead, Prof. Bansal outlined several key initiatives that will shape HPU’s future. One of these initiatives includes the creation of a research club within the university to encourage collaborative research and innovation. He also announced a new initiative to promote anti-drug awareness among students by requiring an undertaking against drug use during the admission process. This move is part of a broader effort to tackle the growing issue of drug addiction in the region.
Prof. Bansal also emphasized the importance of skill development for students. “In the coming years, we plan to make skill-based courses mandatory alongside the traditional degree programs. This will ensure our students are better equipped for the job market,” he said, adding that employability will be a key focus in the university’s curriculum reforms.
Request for Relief from Additional Workload
While Prof. Bansal’s tenure has been marked by numerous successes, he expressed a need for more focused attention on the university’s core activities. “While I am grateful for the trust placed in me, I request the Governor and the state government to relieve me of the additional workload to concentrate fully on the development and growth of Himachal Pradesh University,” he said.
Prof. Bansal’s tenure as Vice Chancellor has been characterized by significant achievements, and with his future plans in motion, HPU is poised for continued growth as a center of excellence in higher education.
