Shimla, March 20, 2025 – An emotional farewell was held today for Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, who was cremated in his native village of Katgaon, Kinnaur. Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral, paying their last respects to the beloved engineer whose untimely death has shaken the community.
Vimal Negi’s children, a son and daughter, led the final procession and carried their father’s bier, a heart-wrenching symbol of love and loss. The sorrow was palpable as the family, along with numerous others, struggled to come to terms with the tragic death. During the funeral, Kinnaur’s Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma, was seen consoling the grieving family, offering them words of comfort in this difficult time.
The death of Vimal Negi, which has been shrouded in mystery, has raised many questions among the people. The grieving relatives, friends, and well-wishers at the funeral voiced their demand for a CBI inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. They sought accountability for what they believed to be more than a tragic incident. Negi, 55, went missing on March 10, and his disappearance sent shockwaves through the HPPCL community and beyond. He was last seen in Bilaspur district, and after days of uncertainty, his body was discovered on March 19 in Govind Sagar Lake, identified by his driving license. A post-mortem was carried out before his body was brought back to Shimla and later sent to his native Kinnaur for the final rites.
The mysterious circumstances surrounding his death have triggered widespread concern, leading to demands for a thorough investigation. The state government, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Omkar Sharma to probe the matter. In a subsequent development, Rakesh Prajapati was appointed as the new Managing Director (MD) of HPPCL, following the tragic loss.
Vimal Negi’s wife has accused senior officials within HPPCL of mentally harassing her husband, suggesting that the pressure from his superiors may have played a role in his distress. She has called on Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation into her husband’s death. Her grief is compounded by the suspicion that workplace harassment may have contributed to the tragedy.
Adding to the turmoil, HPPCL employees have staged protests against their senior officers, demanding swift and strict action. They demonstrated outside the HPPCL office, calling for the suspension of the MD and the Director, alleging that their negligence may have played a role in the tragedy. Employees have made it clear that their protest will continue until justice is served and appropriate action is taken against those responsible.
The tragic death of Vimal Negi has sparked widespread outrage, with many raising questions about the internal workings of HPPCL and the treatment of its employees. Negi was known for his dedication to his work and his integrity, making his untimely death all the more shocking to those who knew him.
The demand for a CBI inquiry into his death has gained momentum, with many people in the community fearing that a local investigation may not be enough to uncover the truth. The situation remains tense, with calls for justice growing louder each day. The state government’s investigation, while a step in the right direction, will have to address the concerns of both the family and the HPPCL employees to restore faith in the system.
