Dharamshala, March 18: In a significant move to boost the development of Kangra district, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has presented a Rs 58,514 crore budget for the financial year 2025-26. The budget, which was tabled on Monday, focuses on enhancing tourism infrastructure, promoting public welfare, and generating employment opportunities for the people of Kangra. Tourism Development Corporation Vice President RS Bali described the budget as a “symbol of the revival” of the district, emphasizing its importance in shaping the future of the region.
One of the key highlights of the budget is the allocation of Rs 3,000 crore for the expansion of Gaggal Airport, aimed at making Kangra a major international tourist destination. The expansion of the airport is expected to improve connectivity, attract more tourists, and boost the local economy. With the increase in international flights, the district will see a surge in tourist footfall, especially from neighboring countries.
Additionally, the budget includes provisions for the construction of heliports in Palampur and Rakkad, enhancing accessibility to the scenic regions of Kangra. In another major tourism initiative, an ice skating rink will be developed in Dharamshala, which is expected to make the area a year-round tourist destination. The beautification projects in Palampur and Nagarota Bagwan, along with the development of the Mata Shri Jwala Ji Temple, will further enhance the district’s attractiveness as a tourist hub.
The Chief Minister also announced the establishment of wellness centers in Nagarota Surian, Khabbal, and the surrounding areas. These centers will not only promote the region’s tourism but will also offer health and relaxation services to both locals and visitors. In addition, the Pong Dam area will see a boost in tourism activities, attracting adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
In a bid to encourage entrepreneurship among the youth, the Chief Minister launched the “Mukhyamantri Paryatan Start-up Yojana,” which aims to provide financial assistance and support to aspiring young entrepreneurs in the tourism sector. This initiative will open up numerous avenues for the youth to engage in the booming tourism industry of Himachal Pradesh.
For public welfare, several initiatives were announced, including drinking water and sewerage schemes for Shahpur. The Chief Minister also allocated development grants of Rs 25 lakh for Baijnath-Paprola and Rs 50 lakh for the newly formed Nagar Panchayats, ensuring that these areas receive adequate resources for their growth and development.
In a significant boost to the region’s educational and healthcare infrastructure, the budget includes the establishment of a planetarium and an international zoological park in Bankhandi, Dehra. These projects are expected to bring both educational value and tourism revenue to the area. Furthermore, the government has proposed the development of many schools in Kangra as Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding Schools, which will provide quality education and create a nurturing environment for students.
The healthcare sector will also benefit from the budget, with provisions for setting up a robotic surgery facility at Tanda Medical College. This state-of-the-art facility will enable advanced medical treatments and improve healthcare access for the people of Kangra and surrounding areas. Additionally, a de-addiction and rehabilitation center will be built to address the growing concerns of substance abuse and addiction in the region.
The budget also focuses on sustainable energy projects, with the announcement of an interest subsidy for the 200 MW solar project in Damtal, as well as solar initiatives in the tribal area of Bara Bhangal. These projects will not only contribute to the state’s green energy goals but also create job opportunities in rural areas.
In a final push to promote economic growth, the Chief Minister has ensured that all these projects are aligned with the broader vision of public welfare, creating a balanced approach to tourism development, infrastructure improvement, and social empowerment. As the budget emphasizes the importance of Kangra’s development, it signals a bright future for the district, which is poised to become one of Himachal Pradesh’s most prosperous regions.
This comprehensive budget is a testament to the Sukhu government’s commitment to ensuring the holistic growth of Kangra, making it a model of development that other districts can look to emulate.
