Himachal Pradesh Out of the Thrall of Cold Weather in March; Snowfall in High Altitude, Rain in the Plains
Shimla, March 15: Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing unexpectedly cold weather in months of March. Heavy snowfall in high-altitude areas and recent rains in the plains have left the region with a penetrating chill. Strong winds are blowing across the state, as a result of which the temperature is falling significantly even in the plains.
The minimum temperature in tribal areas has gone below zero even less than 20 years in plain temperature. Now these series of cold has spread to hilly and plain areas. Heavy rain with gusty winds over Shimla and nearby areas have been mentioned since late night. Fresh snow has been recorded in high-altitude parts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu and Chamba, while snow was also reported in popular tourist spot Churdhar in Sirmaur district.
Weather Department Forecast
Rain and snowfall will occur in the state intermittently followed by dry weather after alternating days, predicted by Meteorological department. There is also a possibility of hailstorm and lightning with thunder at one or two places. The department has also warned people of thunderstorms and lightning on March 16, issuing a yellow alert. On March 17, 19 and 20, rain and snowfall is expected in some parts of the state, and dry weather on March 18. From March 21 the weather is expected to improve.
Rainfall and Snowfall Reports
The maximum rainfall in the last 24 hours was 16.1 mm in Kotkhai, Shimla district. Significant rain was also reported from Kufri (12.0 mm), Shilaru (11.4 mm) Kasauli (11.0mm) and Chopal (10.8 mm). For snowfalls, Kukumseri of district Lahaul-Spiti recorded 4.2 cm fresh snow while Keylong witnessed 2 cm of snow. Kufri reported hailstorms, while lightning and thunder were receorded in Bhuntar, Jot, Palampur, etc. Fortunately, no major damage was reported.
Statewide Low Temperatures
The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti district at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, while the highest minimum temperature was observed at 15.2 degrees Celsius in Dhaula Kuan in Sirmaur district. In addition, other tribal areas under the grip of cold wave recording a minimum temperature of -0.8 degrees Celsius at Tabo and 1.2 degrees at Kalpa in Kinnaur, Shimla 5.6 degrees Celsius and Manali 5.2 degrees Celsius, while other areas including Dalhousie, Solan, Chamba, Palampur, etc. also recorded a chilly minimum temperature of 5-10 degrees Celsius.
