Himachal University: Clash Between ABVP And SFI; Several Injured, 7 Arrested
Shimla, March 13: Tension was high on the campus of Himachal Pradesh University after a violent clash between two student organizations, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Students Federation of India (SFI), broke out on Tuesday. Some serious injuries were also examined at the IGMC Hospital in the altercation, which injured several students.
The altercation had begun over a disagreement about posters and slogans written on the walls of an educational complex. The response came after a group of SFI students having breakfast in the university canteen were allegedly attacked by members of the ABVP. As the two sides clashed, things swiftly escalated into violence as members of both groups brandished rods and other weapons.
Following the violence, the Shimla police had swiftly registered a cross-FIR against both the parties. Seven students were arrested and brought before a court today, where they were placed on remand in police custody for six days for further investigation.
The authorities had beefed up security on the campus, the police said, and the situation was now under control. Cases have been registered against both parties under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, authorities said. Law enforcement efforts are continuing to identify others involved in the clash.
Such violence has heightened concern about rising student discontent at the universities. Both student organizations are demanding justice and accountability because of the clash. Having tightened security measures, the university administration and police are slowly restoring the shattered peace and students are hopeful that such incidents can be prevented in the future.
