Solan, March 13 – In a bid to boost the agricultural economy, the local unit of the Agriculture Department here has started purchasing cow dung and compost from farmers. The initiative is part of the state government’s initiative to promote natural farming in the state and at the same time provide farmers and livestock keepers a fair price for their organic products.

Dev Raj Kashyap, Deputy Director to the Agriculture Department in Solan confirmed that the department started to buy cow dung and compost from the Nalagarh region of the district. Currently, 45 quintals of cow dung and compost has been sourced from the farmers in Manjholi area of Nalagarh. The purchases are being made at ₹3 per kg and procurement will be further scaled up in other parts of Solan soon.

Economic Benefits for Farmers

This will benefit the income of farmers in general and especially livestock farmers. The government hopes to add sources of income for farmers through offering a reasonable price for cow dung and compost. This move is also anticipated to promote additional farmers to embrace organic farming practices, minimizing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Excessive use of synthetic fertilizers is degrading the soil quality and affecting the health of consumers, pointed out Dev Raj Kashyap. Cow dung manure is not only an important natural fertilizer but it can also enrich the land and improve the quality of crops, he said. This dovetails with the state’s overall aim to advance sustainable and chemical-free farming.

Support the Natural Farming Campaign

Buying cow dung and compost is also an important step towards bolstering the state government’s natural farming initiative. The project will strengthen the trend towards organic farming by making organic manure more available and increasing its usage. This means that farmers can nurture soil fertility without the unwanted consequences of chemical fertilizers.

Farmers interested in the scheme can contact block-level officers of the Agriculture Department for details and assistance.

An initiative that will not just aid in the better livelihood of farmers but also drive the goal of a healthy, sustainable and prosperous agriculture Ecosystem of the State. With the push on organic farming, Solan is doing its bit for a better tomorrow of its farmers based community.
