First DGP of Himachal, IB Negi Passes Away at 93, Leaves Behind a Legacy of Service and Devotion

Reckong Peo, March 5: Retired IPS officer IB Negi, the first Director General of Police (DGP) of Himachal Pradesh, passed away today at the age of 93. He leaves behind a remarkable contribution towards the service of the nation and was one of the architects to strengthen the security apparatus of the country. IB Negi’s legacy in law enforcement and public service will last for generations as a beacon of discipline, dedication and unflinching commitment.

Negi was born on 31 October, 1932 at quiet Sangla village of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh and entered the world of law enforcing on determination and excellence. One of the eminent member of elite 1958 batch of Indian Police Service (IPS), Negi became the first direct IPS officer from the state of Himachal Pradesh who cleared the prestigious Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam with flying colours. He stood out as one of the most dignified officers of his time, owing to his background in Himachal and a stellar career.

In a series of influential positions with the police and the security forces, Negi held over the years. He worked as the ADC for the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and also as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Nainital and Lakhimpur Kheri districts. Apart from the civil police, he performed an important role in paramilitary forces such as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) etc., with field assignments in areas like the North Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA) and Arunachal Pradesh, where his leadership role was instrumental in restoring peace.
