Shimla, February 18 – The Himachal Pradesh government has one more time extended the time for depositing Passenger Goods Tax (PGT) which is an amount paid by the owners of commercial vehicles as a relief to commercial vehicle owners. Taxi, truck and contract carriage operators facing trouble in paying tax can breathe a sigh of relief with the announcement. The government has also come up with a 10% discount for individuals depositing their pending PGT tax (now renamed Special Road Tax (SRT)) by March 31, 2025.

The decision is likely to be advantageous to numerous commercial vehicle owners in the state who are still pending with their due PGT. Through this special exemption, the vehicle owners can escape additional penalties, at the same time, fulfill the tax requirements without being financially burdened. Due to difficult economic periods, the state government decided to make onetime relief option for this. The government launched this programme to ensure that their commercial vehicles do not stop plying and commercial operations do not suffer due to pending taxes.

The clock is ticking: No tax payment, no services

Although the extended deadline comes as relief, the Transport Department has also clarified that the government’s special relief offer will close on March 31, 2025. On or after this date, vehicle owners that do not deposit the PGT tax will no longer be eligible to benefit from the 10% discount. The department also said that after the March 31 deadline, Special Road Tax (SRT) exemptions would not be granted and vehicles will not be able to avail facilities under the PGT scheme.

The Transport Department reiterated that vehicle operators who do not pay taxes on time would also face disruptions to their vehicle operations. This includes suspending vehicle passing and stopping permits for taxis, trucks and contract carriages. The rules of the Excise Department will be imposed on tax-defaulters, including the penalty for non-payment, fines, etc.

Govt Appeals to Commercial Vehicle Owners

With the deadline looming, the Transport Department has now called on all commercial vehicle owners to take advantage of the government’s relief offer as soon as possible. The department has stressed that this is a one-time program to resolve outstanding taxes at a discount. It is aimed to assist vehicle owners and help to keep their businesses running smoothly without interruptions due to outstanding taxes.

The government has further confirmed that no additional extensions would be provided beyond March 31. As a result, it becomes imperative for vehicle owners to make the payment of PGT Tax on time and avoid facing any penalties or interruption in their business.

A Move Toward Economic Aid

By making this announcement, the state government is trying to facilitate economic relief for the transport-sector, a major contributor to the economy of Himachal Pradesh. Such relief steps have been long-demanded by the owners of commercial vehicles, especially in the aftermath of the financial stress brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reduction-in-price of PGT tax paid at 10% is a big relief which enables the commercial vehicle business to work without fear of getting caught in tax problem. Now that the Transport Department has provided a clear message and an extended deadline, the owners of vehicles will have an opportunity to determine and settle their dues to avoid issues in the future.

Owners of vehicles are also urged to pay their taxes as soon as possible and not to let this opportunity for a discount slip through their fingers.
