Mining Mafia Thrives Under Sukhu Government, Claims Jairam Thakur
He criticized the Sukhu-led government for permitting the mining mafia to continue unchecked, leaving the public with no option but to seek justice through the High Court.
Shimla, (Himachal Pradesh) [India], January 14 (Diary Times): Jairam Thakur, Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister, has accused the Himachal Pradesh government of offering protection to the mining mafia, alleging that both the administration and ministers have failed to stop their illegal operations. He criticized the Sukhu-led government for permitting the mining mafia to continue unchecked, leaving the public with no option but to seek justice through the High Court.
Thakur raised questions about whether the mafia was directly protected by those in positions of power, highlighting the government’s failure to take decisive action. “The situation has become so dire that even the Deputy Chief Minister is seen requesting the administration to take action, which underscores the government’s helplessness,” he stated.

In reference to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against illegal mining in the Deputy Chief Minister’s own district, Thakur pointed out that the High Court had taken serious note of the issue and issued a notice to the state government. He stressed that the government’s inability to address the mafia’s activities has compelled the public to turn to the judiciary for justice.
Thakur also expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, criticizing its tendency to raise such crucial matters in public forums instead of addressing them through departmental discussions. He argued that the unchecked operations of the mining mafia have had a detrimental effect on local communities and the environment, further revealing the government’s inefficiency in tackling the issue.
