Himachal Cabinet Advances Environmental Initiatives: Tree Felling Ban, Green Energy Fees, and Nalagarh Hydrogen Project

The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has taken key steps to promote environmental conservation and sustainable energy development. A ban on tree felling has been enforced, with exceptions made for species such as Safeda, Poplar, and Bamboo. Additionally, the felling of Khair trees will be permitted only under a controlled ten-year program, ensuring the protection of the state’s forests while balancing developmental needs.

As part of its commitment to clean energy, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a 1 MW Green Hydrogen project in Nalagarh, which will be implemented by the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL). This initiative is set to enhance the state’s renewable energy efforts and pave the way for future green energy projects.

The Cabinet introduced Green Energy Development Charges for Pumped Storage Projects as part of its push for sustainable energy practices. A fee of ₹2.5 lakh per MW per year will be levied during the first ten years following a project’s commissioning, with the rate increasing to ₹5 lakh per MW annually thereafter. These charges are designed to encourage environmentally responsible energy production while also generating revenue for the state.

Additionally, the Cabinet designated the area around the Tara Devi Temple in Shimla district as a Green Area. This decision is intended to protect the local ecosystem by limiting human interventions in the region.
