Umesh from Shimla creates history, excise inspector tops HAS exam
Shimla, January 07: Umesh hailing from Janol village of Shimla rural has topped the Himachal Administrative Services (HAS) Examination-2024, bringing laurels to the village and family. 29-year-old Umesh’s success is not just the result of hard work. However, it also serves as an inspiration for those youth who have the desire to turn their dreams into reality despite the odds being stacked against them.
3rd interview: became topper
Umesh’s journey was not an easy one. This was his third interview for HAS, he told. He has confidence and dedication that any difficult goal can be achieved.
Umesh has a B.Tech degree
Umesh did his schooling from Shimla. He then graduated with a B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Baddi University.
He was dreaming of administrative services when he was studying. Swami Vivekananda’s ideology inspired him to move on in life, he says.
Preparing for exam while working
At present Umesh is posted as Excise Inspector at Shimla Headquarters. He got this post in 2019. Preparing for HAS as well as the job was quite difficult for him.
Umesh said that the job has always been a hindrance due to lack of time, but I used to find time for studying in the morning and evening.
Umesh said that his studies were mostly self run. Nonetheless, he did have some coaching for a period in 2017. However, he understood that avoidise plan when studying is most beneficial. His strategy was to do deep diving and study the topics and read current affairs on daily basis. He was always up to date with what he read in newspapers and online.

Umesh credits much of his success to his family. His father is a retired Additional Assistant Engineer at the Electricity Board. Umesh’s wife pursuing PhD in Forestry and they have a son aged one year. Umesh has said that the biggest strength was the family support and encouragement.
“With so many responsibilities, it was not easy but I did it,” Umesh says of preparing for the HAS. He often had to deal with stress and fatigue. But he never gave up. He stood up to each challenge, drawing strength from the quotes of Swami Vivekananda. As long as you work hard in the right direction with a determined mind, you can achieve any goal.
Message for youth who are preparing for competitive exam
Umesh has delivered a special message for the youth preparing for competitive exam. And that “the biggest enemy of success is giving up.” If you are hard working and dedicated to your goal then one day success will definitely be at your feet.”
Serving the society is the motto of Umesh after being HAS. He said that he wants to work especially to encourage rural development and inspiration among youth. Umesh claims that he aims to bring positive change in the society through administrative services.
