The Chhaila-Ochghat-Kumarhatti road, a key route for apple transportation and a vital alternative to the Shimla-Kalka highway, is set to undergo significant development. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the project during his visit to Kotkhai in Shimla district on Saturday. The state government has allocated Rs. 250 crore for the expansion of this road into a double-lane highway, with officials instructed to expedite the process by preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The Chief Minister emphasized the strategic importance of this road, particularly for apple growers in the upper Shimla region. Serving as a crucial link to major markets and acting as a shorter route to Chandigarh and Delhi, this road plays an essential role in the agricultural economy. With increasing traffic congestion on the Shimla-Kalka highway, the widening of the Chhaila-Ochghat-Kumarhatti road is expected to alleviate pressure on the main routes while enhancing the efficiency of apple transportation, thereby boosting the state’s economy.

In addition to the road development, the Chief Minister announced other infrastructure improvements, including Rs. 5 crore each for the construction of bridges over Khaltu Nallah and Chamshu Nallah. These bridges will address the connectivity needs of local residents, addressing long-standing demands for better access. Furthermore, Rs. 3 crore has been earmarked for the construction of the Tikkar Bus Stand, a much-needed facility to accommodate the growing population in the region.
The Chhaila-Ochghat-Kumarhatti road has long been considered an essential economic and logistical lifeline. Its current condition often leads to delays, particularly during the apple harvest season, causing significant losses for farmers and traders. By transforming it into a double-lane highway, the government aims to tackle these challenges, improve infrastructure, and support the growth of both agriculture and tourism in the region. The project is also expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Shimla, offering a much-needed alternative route and easing the burden on existing roads.
