Himachal’s Rising Heart Disease Rates: A Growing Concern for All Ages
Heart Disease Continues to Claim Lives in the State; A Call for Awareness and Action
Shimla, December 31: Despite being known for its clean air and tranquil environment, Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a troubling rise in heart disease cases. Heart disease, which now accounts for 14.29% of all deaths in the state, is higher than the national average of 13.20%. The trend is becoming alarming, with a staggering 111% increase in heart disease cases over the last 31 years. Once thought to affect primarily the elderly, heart disease is now making inroads into the younger population, with individuals between the ages of 20 and 40 also falling victim to cardiovascular issues.
According to the Global Burden of Disease report, Himachal ranks fifth in the country for heart disease-related deaths and second in terms of high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This statistic paints a concerning picture of the health challenges facing the state, driven by rapid urbanization, changing lifestyles, and unhealthy dietary habits.
In the past, the traditional Himachali diet was rich in whole grains, pulses, and fresh fruits, contributing to better heart health. However, with the growing influence of processed foods, sugary drinks, and junk food, obesity and high cholesterol levels have become increasingly common. This shift in diet, coupled with decreased physical activity, has heightened the risk of heart disease, particularly among the youth.
Dr. Vikas Kumar, Associate Professor at AIIMS Bilaspur, stresses the urgency of addressing this issue. “The rising incidence of heart disease among the youth in Himachal is a serious concern. If we act swiftly and make the necessary lifestyle changes, the situation can be controlled. Both the health department and the community need to come together to raise awareness about heart disease,” he stated.
The increase in heart disease cases also highlights the importance of preventive measures. Regular physical activity such as walking, running, cycling, or swimming can help maintain heart health. Aiming for at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week is recommended. Furthermore, adhering to a traditional Himachali diet and avoiding fried foods, excessive sugar, and processed snacks can reduce the risk of heart issues.

Proper sleep is another essential factor in maintaining heart health. Lack of sleep can contribute to high blood pressure, obesity, and increased stress, all of which are linked to heart disease. Additionally, yoga and meditation can be effective tools for managing stress, which is a growing concern among the youth. It is also crucial for individuals to regularly check their blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, particularly if there is a family history of heart disease.
As heart disease continues to claim lives in Himachal Pradesh, it is vital that both the state’s residents and authorities take the necessary steps to address this growing crisis and promote heart-healthy habits for all age groups.
